Chromohydrosis

Description

Chromidrosis is a disease that is accompanied by pathological secretion of sweat glands, while the secret has a variety of colors (green, blue, red, yellow or other color shades). The reason for this phenomenon may be the production of a specific pigment in the apocrine glands, the appearance of a coloring substance during the vital activity of various bacteria living on the skin, as well as as a consequence of the ingestion of harmful chemicals into the body.

There are three types of chromohydrosis:

  • Apocrine chromohydrosis: affects areas of the body containing apocrine sweat glands, such as the trunk, eyelids, scalp, ears.
  • Eccrine chromohydrosis: Since eccrine sweat glands are widespread, it can affect any part of the body.
  • Pseudochromohydrosis: Occurs when dyes, chemicals, or pigment-producing bacteria mix with colorless sweat to form colored sweat.

Chromohydrosis can occur at almost any age, but usually becomes noticeable after puberty, when the apocrine glands begin to secrete fluid.

This condition is chronic, but colored sweat may decrease over time, as the body produces less lipofuscin, the pigment responsible for color change. People with chromohydrosis may have more lipofuscin, which is more oxidized. Chromohydrosis is a benign condition. However, stress or embarrassment about the color of sweat can lead to depression and anxiety.
