Signs and Wonders

"Signs and Wonders" is the ninth episode of the seventh season of the TV series "The X–Files". The episode belongs to the "monster of the week" type and is not related to the main "mythology" of the series.

A small town becomes the scene of brutal ritual murders. The investigation leads Agents Mulder and Scully to the "Church of the God of Signs and Wonders", whose followers interpret the Bible literally. They soon realize that the difference between a fanatic sect and a church may not be that big.

A woman who became pregnant from the antagonist of the episode gives birth to a tangle of large snakes that quickly crawl away in an unknown direction. In some cultures, such phenomena are considered a sign of induced damage and occur as a result of its successful removal.

The antagonist of the episode, who may be a demon, has supernatural abilities: he controls the behavior of snakes, sends snake-related visions to people, and probably can turn into a large snake himself. There is a snake in his belly that can crawl out through his mouth and feed on laboratory mice.
