Description

"The List" "The List" is the fifth episode of the third season of "Secret Materials." It belongs to the type of "monster of the week" and is not related to the main "mythology" of the series, set in the first series.

Plot

Before being executed in an electric chair, the prisoner Napoleon Manley, nicknamed "Nich" promises to resurrect and kill five people who were the worst treated him.

After a while, Mulder and Scully come to the prison to investigate the mysterious death of a guard killed in Nich's cell. Inmate John Speranza believes that Nich returned, but the director of the prison named Broder does not believe it. From Parmelli's security guard, agents learn that there is a list of planned victims, which knows a suicide bomber named Rock. In exchange for information, the prisoner demands transfer to another prison, but is refused.

The next day, the inmates doing painting work find the head of another guard in a jar of paint. Mulder and Scully establish that the guard's head is eaten by the larvae of the green fly. The security guard's body later ends up in Broder's office. Mulder and Scully interview Manly's wife, Danielle, who secretly meets Parmelli. On Broder's orders, the guards beat Rock to death in the showers. Inmate John Speranza informs Mulder that Roca was not on Nitch's list, but refuses to name those who enter. Mulder asks Broder to name Manly's executioner. Arriving at the executioner's home, agents find him dead and also eaten by the larvae of the green fly. Speranza claims to have seen Nich outside his cell at night. After examining Manly's phone records, Scully suggests that Manly's attorney, Chavez, may have orchestrated the killings in connection with Speranza. After questioning the lawyer, agents learn that Manly's wife is dating Parmelli. When they leave with the intention of spying on Parmelli, Chavez decides to relax on the couch. At this point, the resurrected Manly smothers his pillow.

Broder offers Speranza a commutation of sentence in exchange for an end to the murders, and he agrees. That same night, Daniel Manley wakes up and sees her husband standing next to him. In fear, Daniel grabs a revolver and accuses Parmelli of resurrecting Nich in his body, and then kills the guard. Broder, having decided that Chavez and Parmelli were on the list, and now the murders are over, announces to Speranza in the showers that their deal will not take place. Speranza tells him that there is another person left on the list, after which Broder beats him to death.

Parmelli is charged with murder. Mulder and Scully go back, but on the way upset Mulder swerves to the sidelines, expressing his displeasure with the outcome of the investigation, because there are too many inconsistencies in the case. While the agents are talking among themselves, Broder drives past them. Looking at the agents in the rearview mirror, Broder suddenly sees nich Manly, who is sitting in the back seat of his car. Manly pounces on Broder, and the car crashes into a tree. Broder dies in a crash, becoming the latest victim on Manly's list.

Ghost

Shortly thereafter, people associated with the executed criminal begin to die. Before he dies, each of them sees a green fly, and then the ghost itself appears. The bodies of the dead quickly decompose, they reveal a large number of fly larvae.
