Plot

Adam Pearce, a scientist California Institute of technology, receives a video transmission from "Agneta", a robot made for volcanic research at mount avalon in Oregon. "Onehot" broadcasts from inside the volcanic caves on the bottom which pierce says the body of the chief of the seismological research group of Phil Erickson. There he sees a shadow moving in the cave – which is impossible due to extremely high temperatures in this place. A mysterious figure brings down the camera, "Agneta", stopping the stream.

Pierce goes to Mulder and Scully, which shows video from the "Onegod" and the earlier news release with the participation of the head of the project Daniel Tripcase; pierce participated in the project until then, until he had a falling out with Tracecom. The agents take the case, but Mulder resisted the trip Scully in Oregon, referring to her recent kidnapping. Scully insists on their participation.

Upon arrival at the pier mount goes into the forest to inspect the equipment, while agents are looking for the lab. They discover a team of engineer-robotics Jason Ludwig, assistant chemist Peter Tanaka, and a College graduate Jesse O'neill, who are in a state of psychological shock. According to members of the team, Tracosa was bipolar, and after the first descent "of Onegod" he was acting strange, and then destroyed the lab and vanished. At this time, outside Trepko meets the Pier and kills him.

After the detection command of the body of the Pier, Mulder finds scattered records Tripcase. There are found references to the supposedly new type of organism based on silicon that exists within the mountains of avalon. However, Scully emphasizes that Trepko was not himself, and puts his conclusion into question. Laboratory Tanaka falls into convulsions, he has a fever, but he refuses to help Mulder or Scully. When it is put on a stretcher for medical evacuation, Mulder notices on the neck of the assistant throbbing bulge. Tanaka escapes into the woods and dies after his throat is pulled out from a body. Scully conducts an autopsy and discovers the sand in the lungs of the deceased, which confirms the version of the silicon nature of the parasite. Scully suggests that if the spores do not infect the next potential media immediately after the distribution, they die. Mulder is associated with the Center for disease control and transmits the message requesting closure of the area for the quarantine.

Mulder and Ludwig are making a risky descent into the volcanic cave to find Tripcase. When they find the "Onegod", Trepko kills Ludwig shot in the back of the rocket and ignites his body, as Ludwig was also infected by spores. Then Trepko tells Mulder that after "Onehot" back from your first dive, Erickson crushed one of the stone samples, which led to his death, and immediately infected all the other scientists except Tripcase. Daniel argues that disputes parasitic in nature, and force their carriers to take actions that help to infect other people. Meanwhile, in laboratory infected O'neill, chaining herself to Scully to make that the controversy, but Scully saved, leaving Jesse in an airtight chamber and closing the door. Swelling in the neck O'neal breaks through her throat, killing her, but not throwing controversy on Scully.

Mulder and Trepko returned to the scene. Mulder on the radio requires the evacuation of a group, but realizing that Trepko refuse rescue, reports that among the survivors he was left alone with Scully.

After a month of quarantine agents go to the quarantine area and see how the military confiscated the materials from the lab and put up cordons around the mountains of avalon. "Onehot" saved, but is too damaged to be read. Trepko and O'neill officially listed among the missing and presumed dead. True destiny Tripcase, which claimed the body of O'neil deep into the volcanic caves, remains unknown.

Unknown creatures

As an unknown creature in the episode acts as a silicon life form – fungus-parasite, found in the crater of the volcano and is able to withstand the high temperature environment.

The fungus infection occurs when its spores into the respiratory system of a person. Alien organism develops in the body of the carrier for several days. After maturing he breaks out, tearing the throat of the carrier, and emits a portion of the new argument. The spores remain active for a short period of time, and to get it you need to inhale them immediately after release. In light of the lost carrier detected by the sand, which is a waste product of a parasite.

The parasite changes the behavior of the carrier: infected people become suspicious, they develop paranoia. At the time of maturation of the parasite forces the media to approach other people to increase their likelihood of Contracting the ejected spores.
