The Well of Hell

The Barkhout Well in eastern Yemen, known as the "Well of Hell"— is a little-known natural wonder.

It is closer to the border with Oman than to Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, at a distance of 1300 kilometers from Sanaa.  This giant hole in the desert of Al-Mahra province has a width of 30 meters and a depth of 100 to 250 meters.

Local folklore says that the "well" was created as a prison for demons — and this reputation is supported by the disgusting smells emanating from its depths.
