Vozdvizhenskoye

Воздвиженское, Moskovskaya oblast', Russian Federation

Description

Near Radonezh there is the village of Vozdvizhenskoye, where three hundred years ago, by order of Peter the Great's sister Sophia, the heads of archers suspected of treason were chopped off. They were executed on a hill, which is now called a Miserable Mountain. The bodies of the dead were not buried, but thrown into a swamp near the neighboring village of Golygino. The disgraced Streltsy were commanded by Prince Ivan Khovansky. Together with the prince, his son was executed.

At night, father and son Khovansky allegedly go out on the road and ask passers-by to bury them humanly. They accompany their requests with bows, taking off their hats. Along with the headdresses, the princes pull off the severed heads.

This mystical story was also told by Anatoly Rybakov in the story for children "The Bronze Bird".
