Stone bridge "Pont-du-Stierchen"

Каменный мост "Pont-du-Stierchen", Luxembourg

Description

Stierches-geescht is conventionally a ghost, impatient of persons with alcoholic intoxication.

The medieval arched stone bridge "Pont-du-Stierchen" is located in the lower town (Grund) on the Alzette River, next to the Neumunster Abbey and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.

The bridge is considered the main habitat of one of the strangest and most mysterious ghosts of Luxembourg - Stierches-geescht. However, it is rumored that the bridge is not the only place where he lives, the ghost can be found in other parts of Luxembourg city.

According to legend, Stierches-geescht was a godless drunkard, and therefore he especially likes to frighten people who have laid by the collar. As soon as he smells the slightest smell of alcohol from a passing person, he immediately jumps on the poor guy's shoulders, knocks him to the ground and starts beating him.

Sometimes the ghost appears in the guise of a bull, a wolf, a dog, a cat, a hare and even a pig. Some of the "victims" claimed to have encountered Stierches-geescht in the form of an empty barrel, while others talked about horse manure. The ghost can also appear in the form of a giant holding a massive baton, with which he is going to beat careless drunks.

Legend claims that the ghost interfered with the parade by jumping in front of horse-drawn carriages, thereby causing chaos in the city center in the 17th century. At one time, he prevented the monks of Neumunster Abbey from holding evening masses by holding the bells or lying on the street, preventing parishioners from attending the service or preventing them from leaving the abbey.
