Park of the Living and the Dead

Парк "Живых и мертвых", Воронеж, Voronezhskaya oblast', Russian Federation

Description

Park "The Living and the dead", "BENCH press", "Park of Culture and Recreation of Voroshilovsky district", Park named after Durova is located in the Leninsky district of Voronezh.

The newly built Mitrofanovskoye cemetery was founded by the residents of the settlement of Near Chizhovka in 1828 on the outskirts of the settlement and outside Voronezh. The new cemetery did not gain wide popularity, since there was no church on it, and the funeral service had to be performed on the other side of the settlement. Therefore, the cemetery, almost immediately after its foundation, was abandoned and continued to be buried there already in 1831 and 1832, during the cholera epidemic, when there was a shortage of places in other cemeteries. The epidemic has passed — the burials have stopped. In 1836, the All-Holy Church was finally built here, and the cemetery became citywide. In 1934, the Voronezh City Council closed the newly built cemetery. The last burials took place in 1935. After the closure in 1934, the Voronezh Factory Recreation Park was laid out on this site, the city morgue was located nearby, and a small part of the graves were concentrated in the Literary Necropolis. After the demolition of the church, a circus was built in 1972.

After the cemetery was closed, urban legends about ghosts that roamed the alleys appeared. Animals in the Circus sometimes behaved uneasily, unreasonable fear appeared, which in some cases even had to cancel performances.

Our comments

The band members living in Voronezh often visited this park in different years. Outwardly, it looked quite nice (alleys, trees, especially after the recent reconstruction), but even those who did not know its background felt a strange anxiety and a desire to leave as soon as possible.
