Lake Elgygytgyn

Озеро Эльгыгытгын, Chukotskiy avtonomnyy okrug, Russian Federation

Description

There is an amazing lake Elgygytgyn in Chukotka with crystal clear, unusually clear water. Translated from Chukchi, Elgygytgyn means "ice-free lake". This is an exaggeration, it freezes and is only free of ice for a couple of months a year. Locals consider the lake magical and tell legends about it.

From them you can learn that a shaman with an ice head once lived on the lake and that once they caught a terrible fish there, whose vertebrae were almost human-sized... They also say that when strange northern mirages light up over the lake, people who find themselves near it disappear without a trace.

Recently, there have been rumors that a monster bigger than Loch Ness lives in the lake.
