Kok-Kol Lake

Озеро Кок-Коль, Kazakhstan

Description

Kok-Kol Lake is located in Zhambyl region. Although no river or stream flows into it or flows out of it, the water in it is constantly cold and transparent, and its level never rises or falls. But from time to time, large funnels suddenly appear on the previously calm water surface, sucking floating objects, which then disappear without a trace. According to scientists, the reason for this is the network of an unknown system of underwater caves.

Legends say that in the depths of the lake lives the "water spirit of Idahare", which sometimes rises to the surface and drags waterfowl and water-drinking animals under the water. Including livestock.

Many researchers of the lake also told about meetings with an unknown creature resembling a giant snake.

Also, many visitors to the lake claim that they have repeatedly heard loud hissing and growling, allegedly issued by an underwater monster. However, scientists believe that all these terrible sounds are made by the lake itself because of some processes taking place at the bottom.

According to ancient legends, Kok-Kol is bottomless.
