Kamenets

Каменец, Orlovskaya oblast', Russian Federation

Description

At the end of the XVI century, pilgrims chose the area of the village of Verkhososenye, which stands on the Sosna River in the Oryol region. They made a wooden chapel, surrounded it with a fence and stayed there to live. Gradually, the small settlement became a monastery, which became famous throughout the district. However, a few years later the Crimean Tatars came. Having seen the monastery walls, they could not pass by. They decided to take tribute from the population, but met fierce resistance from the monks.

On the first evening, they could not take the monastery by storm. And the next morning, a thick fog descended on the banks of the Pine River. When it dissipated, the monastery disappeared with it. Locals say that the ringing of bells was heard loud and clearly, as if from under the ground.

Later, a hot underground spring burst to the surface on the site of the monastery, which still exists today. It is known as Kamenets. The water in it has long cooled down, but as a reminder of a long-ago event, molten stones remained. They have a bizarre shape, like frozen air chocolate. But the most incredible thing is that all the stones are warm to the touch - at any time of the year.
