The Gate to Hell

In 2013, Italian archaeologists made an amazing discovery. Scientists have concluded that the gates to hell are located in the southwestern part of the country. The mythological description of the entrance to the afterlife seemed to perfectly match the find on the territory of present-day Pammukale.

A group of researchers led by Professor Francesco D'Andria found a staircase leading deep into the ground in the ancient temple of Hierapolis. Where did the idea come from that this is a way to reach the depths of hell? On the Ionic columns located near the passage, there were inscriptions dedicated to the deities of the underworld – Pluto and Cora. Moreover, to check whether the expedition along the newly discovered route is completely safe, the researchers decided to release several sparrows from the stairs. These birds have been used for many years in underground expeditions to check the purity of the air. Unfortunately, none of the animals survived the expedition.

It turned out that the air in the cave is saturated with a large number of deadly gases. Therefore, this object still remains unexplored. Locals believe that archaeologists have indeed discovered the gates to the afterlife and anyone who happens to be near them will be cursed or die under mysterious circumstances.
